Symbolism <\/b><\/h2>

The skull motif is the most classic symbol of transience and death defined by the Latin expression <\/span>memento mori<\/b>, (\"remember death\", \"remember that you will die\"). It was meant to encourage reflection on the meaning of existence and the value of life. It was particularly popular in Baroque art. <\/span><\/p>

Historical context<\/b><\/h2>

During the Baroque era, memento mori type sculptures were popular in both religious art. Their presence in domestic altars, sacred interiors, but also in wunderkammer type collections reflected the spiritual and existential needs of the era. Skulls were depicted as cautions, objects of contemplation, and sometimes as protective talismans in practices of folk occultism. In the culture of Central and Eastern Europe, the presence of such sculptures is also associated with ritual traditions and reflection on the place of man in relation to the sacred and death. <\/span><\/p>

The object represents an interesting example of 18th century guild woodcarving. Due to the realism of the representation and the very good state of preservation of the sculpture, it is an interesting item for both collectors and lovers of unusual objects from past eras. The sculpture will prove excellent as a quaint piece of interior design. <\/span><\/p>

Despite its small size, the sculpture features great detail and careful finishing, with well-preserved anatomical proportions. The patina color adds to its charm. <\/span><\/p>
