Historical context<\/b><\/h2>

In Romanesque and early Gothic art, figural capitals were the distinctive visual language of the era. Carved images, along with floral ornaments, served to convey theological, moral and social content. They are encountered in the monasteries of Languedoc and Umbria, in the northern regions of the Iberian Peninsula, as well as in the sacred spaces of Central Europe. They could crown columns, support arches or be part of portals.
