Govert Camphuysen
(b. 1623-1624, Dokkum - d. 1672, Amsterdam)<\/h2>

Govert Camphuysen was born <\/span>around 1623-1624, probably in Dokkum (northern Netherlands). He was the son of Dirck Raphaelsz Camphuysen and Anne van Alendorp. When his father died in 1627, his mother moved with her children to Amsterdam. Camphuysen lived in the Jordaan district. He is known to have painted portraits in 1643. In 1647. <\/span>He married Nelttje Francken (born c. 1627), and around 1650 left the <\/span> City, soon after he became a townsman. He was living on Kalverstraat at the time and may have been in financial trouble. He portrayed Queen Hedwig Eleonora of Sweden in Stockholm, but he is best known for his depictions of livestock and peasants around country cottages, inns, inside barns and stables. Our painting fits perfectly within the scope of this subject matter. <\/p>

A composition similar to ours (undoubtedly from under the same hand) was offered at auction at the Dorotheum in Vienna in 2012, as a work by an artist \"in the circle\" of Govert Camphuysen. The painting, however, is listed in the archives of the Netherlands Art Institute (RKD) as his work, with no claims of authorship. Analogous motifs, such as a shepherd with a horn, or a very similar cottage, can be found in other paintings by this artist. The division into two scenes (on the left, a movement - leading a bull, on the right, a static homestead) is a treatment found in Camphuysen's work. The cows are quite massive, with slightly simplified anatomy and warm, reddish tones - less \"luminous\" and idealized than in Paulus Potter. The cottage, with its steep, somewhat \"wild\" roof and rustic character, is very fitting for his work - more austere than Cuyp's. Muted browns, olive greens and gray-beige skies create Camphuysen's typical slightly melancholy northern atmosphere. All these qualities are not only very fitting for the artist himself or his workshop.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
