The demigod Hercules was one of the most popular figures of ancient mythology and the epitome of physical strength and courage. His performance of the \"Works\" symbolized the triumph of good over evil, against all odds. <\/span><\/h5>
In university cities such as Padua, Ferrara and the Veneto region, a feverish, intellectual, humanist culture inspired the production and collection of bronze statuettes modeled on surviving ancient specimens. The composition of the statue is reminiscent of examples of Roman figural art, such as the Hercules statue from the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (object no. 26.7.859), dating to the 1st\/2nd century after Christ. <\/span><\/h5>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The figurine, depicting Hercules, is modeled after ancient Roman sculptures. This statuette was cast in a light brown, slightly golden bronze alloy. As is usual with early castings modeled on ancient bronzes, the surface of the object has not been thoroughly finished (forging, sawing, etc.). The surface of the legs bears traces of fine forging in the form of a beautifully wavy surface. Details such as eyes, pupils, hair, toes and hands are sharply incised in an engagingly expressive manner. Together, these features strongly indicate an early 16th century date, and a likely workshop origin from one of the northern Italian city-states: Padua, Ferrara or the Veneto region. <\/span><\/p>\n

In keeping with the ancient archetype, Hercules is depicted here in heroic nudity and elegantly standing in classical counterpoint, with his head turned slightly to the left.
