Bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara is among the most venerated figures in Mahayana Buddhism (a tradition that emphasizes compassion and the pursuit of enlightenment for the benefit of all beings). Avalokiteśvara embodies compassion (karuṇā) and the readiness to offer assistance to all living beings. His worship spread throughout Asia, taking various forms—in China as Guanyin, in Japan as Kannon, and in Tibet as Chenrezig.
