Crucifix base in the form of a skull topped with a stylized tree trunk, wood, Germany (?), 18th-19th century.

5300,00

A unique dark wood sculpture featuring a realistically carved human skull, embraced from above by four massive handles resembling claws or roots. These handles converge and twist into a single, compact form, reminiscent of a stylized tree trunk, ending in a flat-cut top surface with a full-width groove, indicating the object was originally part of a larger structure. The skull is carved with meticulous attention to anatomical details, such as cranial sutures, nasal apertures, and dentition. Its form and construction suggest the sculpture served as the base for a memento mori crucifix; the missing element of carved bones beneath the occiput causes the object to currently present with a slight tilt, whereas it was originally positioned vertically.

Symbolism

In Christian iconography, placing a skull at the foot of the cross refers to Golgotha, the site of Christ's Crucifixion, traditionally identified with Adam's grave. It serves as a visual reference to the Christian vision of death as a consequence of original sin and the idea of redemption achieved through Christ's sacrifice. This motif combines the symbolism memento mori with the hope of salvation, giving the show a clear devotional dimension.

Historical context

The few surviving examples of carved crucifix bases in the form of a skull, dating to the 18th and 19th centuries, come from Germany. They were most likely made as elements of freestanding crucifixes, intended for small chapels, monastic spaces or for private use.

Collector's value

Crucifix bases in the form of a skull, using the motif of a memento mori, are rarely found on the antique market. The combination of a realistically rendered skull with an unusual base form gives it an individual character and distinguishes it from more schematic representations. Items of this kind are of interest to collectors of iconography memento mori and unusual devotional items.

Aesthetic qualities

The sculpture impresses with the precision of the anatomical details of the human skull, such as the cranial sutures, dentition and the form of the nasal openings. The juxtaposition of its realistic elaboration with the organic form of the shaft creates an unusual and eye-catching object, even without the preserved crucifix.

Application

The object could function both as part of a private collection or thematic collection, as a film or theater prop, or as interior decoration of a dark or contemplative nature. There is also the possibility that it could be restored to its original function as a crucifix base; this would require filling in the missing element in the form of carved bones under the occiput, which would allow the shaft to be set upright, and re-setting the crucifix.
