Description
Pejzaż z wodospadem w Tivoli, szkoła niemiecka / holenderska, olej na desce, I poł. XIX w.

A classic, romantic-classical Italian landscape depicting the famous waterfalls in Tivoli near Rome—one of the most iconic motifs in Grand Tour painting.

The composition of the painting is based on a traditional, stage-like spatial arrangement. On the right, a mass of foaming water from the Great Cascade (Grande Cascata) flows dynamically downward, with delicate wisps of mist floating above it, painted with great skill using the glazing technique. In the background, against the hills bathed in the warm light of the rising or setting sun, the outlines of the ancient town of Tivoli are visible.

The foreground is enlivened by a pastoral scene (a shepherd’s idyll)—shepherds resting by a sandy road, accompanied by a flock of sheep and a pack donkey. The trees on the left, rendered in deep shades of brown and green, show strongchiaroscuro influences from the school of 17th-century landscape masters (such as Claude Lorrain and Gaspard Dughet), which served as the foundation for 19th-century academic artists.

The use of a wide, single softwood panel as a support, along with the precision of the micro-details in the background figures and the water scene, strongly links the artist’s technique to the circle of Central and Northern European painters (the so-called Deutschrömer or Dutch Neoclassicists), who produced works in large numbers in Rome and its environs during the first half of the 19th century. The absence of a signature was common in this type of painting—these works often found their way directly into the collections of aristocrats traveling through Italy as luxurious souvenirs from the journey of a lifetime.

Artistic Merits

Even as the work of an anonymous but technically highly skilled master from the first half of the 19th century, this painting is a first-rate example of European landscape painting. The excellent use of chiaroscuro, the high quality of the figure and animal depictions, and the superb rendering of spatial depth significantly enhance its visual appeal.
