Symbolism or most important feature
The Icon of Our Lady of Ostra Brama is one of the most important and revered Marian images in Central and Eastern Europe. The gilded frame and applied enamel emphasize the luminosity of the divinity and protection of the Mother of God, while the velvet background reinforces the sacred character of the object. The portable format allowed for Mary's presence in everyday life, both domestic and traveling.
Historical context
Icons of this type were particularly popular in the 19th century, especially in the territories of Poland, Lithuania and Belarus. During the partition period, they also served as national-religious symbols of cultural and spiritual belonging. The depiction of the Ostrobramska Mother expressed not only faith, but also attachment to the homeland, being one of the most recognizable motifs of Marian iconography in sacred art under the Partitions.
Collector's value
A 19th century portable icon of Our Lady of Ostra Brama, preserved in very good condition, with original gilding, enamel and textile background. Valuable to collectors of Polish religious art, enthusiasts of Marian iconography, and as an educational exhibit in museums or thematic galleries.
Aesthetic qualities
An ornate frame with a classical display system, subtly rubbed fabric and relief details and enameled hands and face of Mary give the whole an elegant and unique character. Despite its small size, the object retains the proportions and rhythm of composition appropriate to the liturgical design of the period.
Application
It can function as a personal altarpiece, part of a religious exhibition, a prayer object in the home, as well as a collectible museum exhibit. Thanks to its leg and pendant, it can be displayed vertically on a shelf or hung on a wall. Its format and iconography make it particularly attractive to those associated with the tradition of the Dawn Gate Lady of Mercy.
Ostrobramska - the only Marian icon without the Child, but with... swords
The icon of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate is unique in iconography because it depicts Mary without the infant Jesus, a rarity in Marian images of this stature. Her halo is encircled by a dozen swords, which symbolize suffering and complicity in Christ's passion.
It was this drama that made the icon particularly appealing to the faithful during the Partitions - as an image of the Mother suffering with the nation. Miniature icons like this one from the 19th century were carried around like a spiritual shield, especially among women and children in the Borderlands.
